The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) is an organisation, based in Trieste, and stands for the advancement of science in developing countries. TWAS supports sustainable prosperity through research, education, policy and diplomacy.
TWAS has a variety of support programmes, such as workshops, fellowships for students from developing countries to visit affiliated Universities in Europe and grants for visiting scientists.
SISSA participates in these programmes for instance through the TWAS-SISSA Visits Programme that allows young (<40 years) scientists to visit SISSA for 3 months. In 2026, the TWAS Young Affilates Network (TYAN) organised, together with Neurobiology Professors at SISSA, a neuroscience workshop for TYAN members from Chile, Brazil, Kyrgyzstan and Ghana.
